Living and Working in Fuerteventura as a digital nomad
Living and working in Fuerteventura offers a unique combination of a relaxed island lifestyle and a vibrant digital nomad scene.
We have personally met people from all over the globe. And most importantly – already started working together with some of them!
The cost of living is generally lower than in mainland Europe, making it an affordable option for remote workers.
Be prepared to adapt to the slower pace of island life, and take advantage of the opportunity to learn Spanish and immerse yourself in the local culture.
Can I Work Remotely from Spain?
Yes, you can work remotely from Spain, including Fuerteventura.
However, it is essential to understand the legal requirements and ensure that you have the correct visa if you are a non-EU citizen.
The Spanish government has introduced a remote work visa, which allows digital nomads to live and work in the country legally for up to one year.
Make sure to research the specific requirements and application process for your country of origin.
Can I Work Remotely While on Holiday?
Working remotely while on holiday is possible, but it’s essential to consider factors such as time zone differences, internet connectivity, and potential visa restrictions.
To ensure a productive and enjoyable experience, plan your work schedule around your holiday activities and choose accommodation with reliable Wi-Fi.
Be aware of any tax implications related to working in a foreign country, even for a short period. In Fuerteventura – You can work up to 6 months a year without becoming a legal tax resident in Spain.
Fuerteventura Internet Speed
Internet speed in Fuerteventura is generally reliable and sufficient for most digital nomads. The island has several internet service providers offering high-speed fibre-optic connections, with average speeds ranging from 50 to 300 Mbps. (Can be even more.)
We use Movistar and we have a 300 Mbps connection in our home. This costs around 35€ per month.
Wi-Fi is widely available in coworking spaces, cafes, and most accommodations. However, it is a good idea to test the connection speed before committing to a long-term rental or workspace.
Housing for Digital Nomads in Fuerteventura
We decided to buy our property here in Fuerteventura. And You can read all about it here.
But what about renting?
Short-Term Rent Fuerteventura
Short-term rentals in Fuerteventura are ideal for digital nomads looking to test the waters before committing to a longer stay.
Options include holiday apartments, Airbnb rentals, and serviced apartments. Prices for short-term rentals can be higher than long-term options, so consider visiting during the off-peak season or staying outside of tourist hotspots to find better deals.
It’s always cheaper to stay inland than on the coast for example.
Our first place in Fuerteventura was a rental and we are extremely pleased with our experience.
We negotiated a 50/50 deal on our deposit. Meaning, we paid 50% of our deposit to our landlord when we arrived on location. And 50% before. Just to protect ourselves from any harm.
Your best bet and place to look for information about the CURRENT prices is Idealista.
Just be aware of deals that seem “too good to be true.” We have heard that there are scams running even on Idealista.
Basically, they appear to be legit and offer a really good price. And then it turns out to be a scam later when You transfer the deposit.
Estate Agents Fuerteventura & Estate Agents Corralejo
Estate agents in Fuerteventura and Corralejo can be valuable resources when searching for long-term rentals, as they have extensive knowledge of the local property market. Crucially important – especially if You are coming from colder places!
Some reputable estate agencies include Fuerteventura Residences, GoldAcre Estates, and Grupo Inmobiliario Visanta.
Be aware that estate agents may charge a commission, typically equivalent to one month’s rent, so factor this into your budget when considering your accommodation options.
We rented on our own (didn’t use an agent). And the deposit was exactly one month. For short-term rentals – they might ask You to pay for the full stay in advance!
When we decided to buy – we used GoldAcre. And we are pleased with their service. Would recommend!
Private Long-Term Rentals in Fuerteventura
Private long-term rentals in Fuerteventura offer a more personalized experience and can often provide better value than those managed by estate agents.
To find these rentals, network with local residents, join Fuerteventura-focused Facebook groups (as mentioned above) and search for listings on online marketplaces like Idealista.
Keep in mind that negotiating rental terms directly with landlords can be advantageous, but make sure to establish a clear rental agreement to avoid misunderstandings.
Always have a written rental contract. Better to even have a lawyer check the contract if possible! (We mention our lawyer in this post.)
Coliving Fuerteventura
Coliving spaces in Fuerteventura provide a unique opportunity to live and work alongside fellow digital nomads.
These shared living arrangements often include private bedrooms with communal living areas, kitchens, and workspaces, fostering a sense of community and collaboration.
Some coliving spaces also offer additional amenities such as Wi-Fi, cleaning services, and organized social events.
Check out websites like Coliving.com or join Fuerteventura digital nomad groups to find suitable coliving options on the island.
Apartments to Rent in Corralejo
Corralejo, a bustling town in the north of Fuerteventura, is a popular choice for digital nomads seeking accommodation.
The town offers a variety of options, from studio apartments to larger flats and houses. Online platforms such as Idealista, Airbnb, and Booking.com are great starting points for finding short-term rentals.
Keep in mind that prices may vary depending on the season, so booking in advance can help secure better deals. This is crucial when moving to Fuerteventura. The prices You see for one period – might not be there for another!
How to Get Around Fuerteventura as a Digital Nomad
Getting around Fuerteventura is relatively easy, thanks to the island’s extensive network of public buses (known as guaguas), which connect major towns and tourist areas.
Bus schedules and routes can be found on this website or at local bus stations.
Taxis are also readily available and can be a convenient option for shorter trips. For more flexibility and the ability to explore remote areas, consider renting a car or a scooter during your stay.
We talk more about transportation on the island in this post.
Hiring a Car in Fuerteventura for Digital Nomads
Renting a car in Fuerteventura offers the freedom to explore the island at your own pace.
Numerous car rental agencies are available at the airport and in major towns, with options ranging from budget to luxury vehicles.
To get the best deal, book your rental car in advance through websites like Cicar or Autoreisen. We mostly use Cicar – the service is always good and the cars are in tip-top shape. The prices are also affordable!
Be sure to familiarize yourself with local driving regulations and obtain an International Driving Permit if required.
Stay away from Your phone when driving! They have introduced new fines for people on their phones while driving! But that’s not the only reason not to use Your phone behind the wheel!
You can also check out services like Amovens. A car renting app for regular people like You and me.
Fuerteventura Tourist Numbers
Tourist numbers in Fuerteventura tend to peak during the summer months (June to August) and the winter holiday season (December to February).
It gets extremely busy during the Christmas holidays. We couldn’t even fit on the playground with our toddler! Keep that in mind if You are planning to visit for a shorter period of time.
During these periods, prices for accommodation and services may increase, and popular attractions can become crowded.
Visiting during the shoulder seasons (March to May and September to November) can provide a more relaxed experience and better value for money.
Is Fuerteventura in Europe for Travel Insurance?
Yes, Fuerteventura is considered part of Europe for travel insurance purposes, as it is one of Spain’s Canary Islands.
When purchasing travel insurance, ensure that Your policy covers the entire European region, including the Canary Islands.
Double-check the specific terms and conditions of your insurance policy to confirm coverage for remote work-related incidents and any leisure activities you plan to enjoy while on the island.

Can provide some examples of insurance companies you would recommend?
We used Liberty Seguros. One of their representatives on the island is Carolina Romano. Everything was fine with them for us. Things were handled quited quickly.
